Pompeii is located in Italy. It was most famous for the 79 AD volcanic eruption of Mt Vesuvius. The city was covered in ash and lost for hundreds of years. In 1748 a group of explorers found Pompeii again. They were surprised that under the thick layer of ash, the structures were still intact. This helped archaeologists pin point what Pompeii looked like before the eruption and the lifestyles of different people.
